I don't think y'all understood the film, Anna WAS in love, with a character she created in her mind based on stories she heard as a child who helped her heal. Marnie (Anna's grandma) is not the same person as the Marnie we meet. Marnie isn't real. Even when the events were actually Marnie's memories, which wasn't all the time, she often played Kasohiko, the person Marnie ended up marrying. It's unlikely that Marnie was a queer character, but the way Anna felt about this CHARACTER that SHE CREATED shows is that Anna probably is. This is also confirmed by the shows themes of exploring identity through imagination. When Marnie was There is literally Anna's self insert fanfiction of her childhood stories and Marnie as we know her is completely made up

I wonder if one of the reasons Anna was so depressed was because she struggled with her identity both in her mixed ethnicity & queerness & Marlie was an odd way of her using her imagination coming to terms with all of it.
