@evelyn.edwards1: Mary Herbert dowager countess of Pembroke had Houghton House built in 1615 when she was 54 years old. She was an important member of the royal court during both Queen Elizabeth and King James reign. She was the niece id Robert Dudley and grew up spending a significant amount of time in Queen Elizabeth I’s court with Her mother who was an important confident of the Queen. And at one time she herself was part of Elizabeth’s royal entourage. Robert Dudley was a key figure in arranging her marriage to the second Earl of Pembroke. Mary became one of the most important female literary figures of her day, even being listed alongside Shakespeare in contemporary anthologies, and in more recent times has been proposed by some as a possible author of Shakespeare’s works. She had an interest in chemistry and developed invisible ink and medicines. After Houghton House was complete James I visited the grand manor house. Shortly after the visit Mary died of Smallpox at the age of 59. #BookTok #tudortok #tudorhistory #queenelizabethi #authorsoftiktok #shakespeare
