@dobermannation: 🐾 Honoring our four-legged heroes 🐾 If you’re in Knoxville, don’t miss the “Always Faithful” statue at the UT College of Veterinary Medicine. This bronze Doberman, sculpted by Susan Bahary, pays tribute to the 25 Marine war dogs who gave their lives during the 1944 Battle of Guam. It’s a powerful reminder of the courage and loyalty of these canine warriors. The statue was dedicated in 1998, thanks to Dr. Maurice Acree, a Korean War veteran and Doberman enthusiast. He also established a $1.23 million endowment to support small animal research at the college. The memorial features Kurt, the first military working dog killed in action on Guam. In total, the war dogs who helped liberate the island received forty Purple Hearts. The statue is a replica of the original “Always Faithful” monument unveiled in 1994 at the U.S. Marine Corps War Dog Cemetery in Guam. Both memorials were sculpted by internationally known artist Susan Bahary. The statue rests on a granite base inscribed with the names of the 25 dogs who gave their lives on Guam.
