i completely understand ur POV but as someone who disagrees w maid it’s because whilst we live under capitalism, there is no way to do it without ppl abusing it

I’m Catholic, but I believe MAID should be available in every state. If it’s against one’s religious beliefs, they don’t have to use it. But it should be available to anyone who wants this.

My friend w/ ALS chose this….had a good bye party…she did not want to lose ability to talk or breathe on her own…all her loved ones supported her…I’m happy to live in a state w/that choice.

We don’t allow animals to suffer but cannot fathom the same dignity for a human?! Watching and helping my moms hospices was hard, we should have options IF they are wanted

I know someone that utilized it. They changed their Facebook cover photo to the “that’s all folks” looney tunes cartoon bit right before. I laugh about it a lot.

You make some great points. I live in Canada and here the criteria have been gradually expanded to include non-terminal illness and psychological illness. That’s what alarms some advocacy groups.

“How to Die in Oregon” is an excellent documentary on MAID. It’s horribly sad and hasn’t left my brain since 2011, but otherwise a good watch!

I think 6 months even is unreasonable. Some terminal illnesses can be extremely painful for much longer than 6 months. Multiple myeloma is one that comes to mind.

Hospice nurse here....MAID should be an option for anyone with a terminal illness and are able to make their own decisions. Let people die in peace, comfort and dignity!

I’m a social worker in WA and I help with a lot of Death with Dignity cases! There are SO many checks and balances in place with the process, too many even.

I worked in hospice in Colorado and we have MAID here, and each MAID experience I had with patients and families was so beautiful. Dying with dignity is a wonderful thing.

A lot of people who have the meds don’t even end up taking it. For many, the comfort of knowing that it’s there if they need it is enough for them.

Our friend recently went through with MAID after a very aggressive progression of ALS. I am eternally grateful that he was given that option.

There are places (cough canada) that have MAID but don’t have a 6 month guard rail and that’s where I think a lot of concerns about coercion are coming from

I have MAID already. In Canada, the signed document lasts a year. 15 months in with ALS now.

The argument is it is a slippery slope. Canada has opened MAID up to people with non terminal disabilities/chronic illnesses as well as mental health diagnoses. They started with a more narrow qualification and then opened it up to more people.

I don’t understand how they can make the argument against MAID when DNR exists. It’s the same end game without the drama at the end. Let people say goodbye in peace and dignity.

The opposition i have seen to it is in Canada– there seem to be fewer guardrails and there are concerns that instead of providing comprehensive healthcare, housing, etc, people are being/can be coerced into it

My ex had ALS and chose Death with Dignity. As someone who saw the process from beginning to end, it was the most gut wrenching thing to watch. I was in the room when he passed, it was anything but peaceful.
