@chris.philp.official: I believe immigration is far too high & needs to come down a *lot* But Keir Starmer once described immigration laws as “racist” & campaigned for dangerous foreign criminals to stay here No one is convinced by his claims now on borders Last July, Starmer cancelled the Rwanda removals deterrent before it even started As a result, 2025 so far has been the worst in history for illegal immigrants crossing the Channel. Illegal channel crossings have surged 40% since the election. This is on him. Measures introduced by the last ‪Conservatives Government which mainly took effect in April 2024 have dramatically reduced recent immigration. These included: - £28k family salary visa threshold (why did Starmer suspend the planned increase to £38k due in April 2025?) - No dependents for most students - No dependents for social care workers - social care visa sponsors to be CQC regulated - Most salary thresholds for skilled visas set at £38k Starmer now says he wants it to generally take 10 years to get Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). So why did his MPs vote against this just a few weeks ago? And why will he allow immigrants who do not make an economic contribution to still get ILR at 10 years? If we are going to remove those with no right to be here, including foreign criminals, the whole Human Rights Act needs to be repealed for all immigration matters. Yet Labour voted against this recently, and only plan to tinker with part of it (Article 8). This is not enough, and won’t work Yvette Cooper said yesterday that their measures will only reduce migration by 50,000 This is not enough Conservatives will force a vote tonight on creating a binding annual cap on migration - but Labour are likely to vote this down. If they were serious about slashing migration, they would support this plan
