IMAX is screening AI-generated short films in their theaters across the nation. AI is clearly here to stay in Hollywood. The question is, how far will it go? I see a place for generative-AI. If someone used to spend 6 hours drawing the same scene over and over again to render a CG visual, and that can cut down to 6 minutes of rendering from an original human work, that’s amazing. That’s a productivity tool that makes filmmaking easier and more accessible. But if it starts replacing people on the screen, and behind it? Replacing musicians? Replacing artists and visual FX people? No thanks. I don’t want anything that doesn’t have a human attached to it at its core. Generative AI used for imagery, writing, video, and music is just advanced plagiarism. If it’s trained on your own work and makes it faster and better, great. If it’s stealing from others? Consider me out.
