DC KWAME KWAKYE AND HIS SPECIAL ENGLISH DICTION By Kwesi Yankah DC Kwame Kwakye, the legendary District Commissioner during Kwame Nkrumah’s era, was a household name in the 1960s. His fame spread through his humorous and unusual use of English, which entertained audiences across Ghana. One of his famous expressions was: “Today is a great day, and a great day is today, and today is a great day,” reportedly said while flipping through a prepared speech whose opening pages were missing. Born in 1912, Kwakye was a school dropout who rose to prominence through his grassroots connections and association with the Convention People’s Party (CPP), founded by Nkrumah in 1949. His dedication earned him the position of District Commissioner for the Birim District in 1959. Nkrumah reportedly nicknamed him “Charles De Gaulle,” after the French president. His influence helped facilitate major developments in the district, including the Agona Swedru–Oda road, Oda Central Market, Oda Government Hospital, Oda Secondary School and a Fire Service station. However, Kwakye’s national fame came largely from his distinctive Ghanaian English. At an Oda Secondary School speech day, he reportedly struggled to find the English word for kɔtɔkorɔ, the curved drumsticks used by drummers, and coined “wooden koana,” blending English with Twi. When representing Nkrumah at public events, he reportedly explained the President’s absence by saying he could not “division himself into twice,” adding, “I stand here in the leg of Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah today.” On another occasion, when late for a meeting, he introduced himself humorously: “Colleagues, I am the Late DC Kwame Kwakye.” His colourful expressions continued to entertain. Asked about his occupation, he allegedly replied, “I occupy the whole of Akyem Oda district.” When asked about his mission on a visit, he reportedly answered, “My mission? I am a Roman Catholic.” Another famous expression was: “Because of my dibiality, people are working myself arithmetic,” meaning people were gossiping about him because of his elevated position. On leaving a message for an absent colleague, he supposedly said, “When he comes please tell him DC Kwame Kwakye passes away.” These expressions turned Kwakye’s limited English proficiency into a unique form of comic creativity. He brought English closer to ordinary people by giving it a distinctly Ghanaian character, challenging the perception that proficiency in formal English was essential for political influence. The article notes that not every quotation attributed to him may be authentic. For instance, Kwakye was reportedly a staunch member of Awisa Methodist Church, not a Roman Catholic. Like many celebrated historical figures, he may have been credited with expressions that reflected his style rather than words he actually spoke. Interestingly, Kwakye never reportedly challenged the false quotations attributed to him during his lifetime, as they enhanced his popularity and helped create opportunities for development. Today, his legacy lives on through the many humorous expressions associated with his name and the “DC” prefix adopted by some people named Kwakye. Finally, the writer humorously suggests that lawyer Ace Ankomah, who hails from Akyem Achiase within Kwakye’s former jurisdiction, should incorporate some of Kwakye’s diction into his courtroom submissions: “My Lord, Your Honour, I stand here in the leg of Koo Hia, my client….” DC Kwame Kwakye remains a memorable figure in Ghanaian political history, celebrated for transforming imperfect English into an enduring cultural legacy. #fypシ゚viral #viral #trending #dc #OdaCitizenTV
