On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake—the most powerful ever recorded in Japan—struck off the country’s northeastern coast, triggering a devastating tsunami that changed the nation forever. The tsunami reached heights of up to 40 meters (130 feet) in some areas and traveled as far as 10 kilometers (6 miles) inland, destroying entire coastal communities across the Tōhoku region. As the waves overtopped sea walls, they swept away homes, vehicles, ships, and buildings within minutes. The disaster claimed the lives of nearly 20,000 people, including those confirmed dead and missing, and displaced hundreds of thousands of residents. The tsunami also caused the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster, resulting in reactor meltdowns and long-term evacuation zones that affected tens of thousands of people. The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami remains one of the most extensively documented natural disasters in history. The footage recorded that day continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the immense force of nature and the devastating consequences such events can have on entire communities.
