based on what i can find on google it has always been officially “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints” but they have been called mormons due to their belief in “The Book of Mormon”

Mormon was used by non-members as a derogatory slur against members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and because most people knew the church as “Mormons”, the church used the title so people would know who they were talking about

they're both correct. yes the church wanted to distance itself from its past and the members that represented it poorly but also too many people assume Mormons aren't Christians or study the Bible, so the name was changed to include Jesus for the reason she stated
