islam began before the split , so basically shias are just people who believe Imam Ali should of been the first Caliph that is the foundation of difference but then as centuries go on sunnis and shias have created many differences between them that they have turned into sects which is wrong not sects but islam

The Shia consider Ali to be the direct successor of the Prophet, but the Sunnis consider Abu Bakr to be the first caliph. The Shia consider the Imams infallible, the Sunnis only the prophets. Some of the companions are considered to be wrong by the Shia, but the Sunnis consider all of them to be just. In ablution, the Shia wipe the feet and the Sunnis wash. The Shia say "Ali Wali Allah" in the call to prayer, the Sunnis do not. The Shia pray in congregation, the Sunnis only when necessary. Mut'ah is permissible for the Shia, but forbidden for the Sunnis. Tawasul and Ziyarat are preferred by the Shia, but some Sunnis consider them innovations. The Shia consider mourning Ashura obligatory, the Sunnis only commemorate it. The Shia believe that the Mahdi is alive and absent, the Sunnis say that he has not yet come. The Shia accept the infallibility of the Imams and Fatima, the Sunnis only accept the prophets.

being muslim means to believe in Allah, his Prophet Muhammad, and to sincerely follow the islamic teachings. only Allah judges who is truly muslim, not random ppl on the internet. also Islam teaches kindness, not hatred between muslims. so pls remember that before passing judgement n mean words on shias or sunnis, we are all muslim
