Rating apologies because not all "sorrys" are created equal 👇 #1. 8/10 — This is a good apology. It's direct, it takes ownership, and it doesn't make the other person do the emotional labor of explaining why they're hurt. The only reason it's not 100 is because it came after being asked. Still, this is what accountability looks like and it's genuinely rare. Give this person their flowers. #2. 2/10 — "Sorry if you felt that way" is not an apology. It's an apology-shaped sentence that puts the problem on the other person's feelings instead of your behavior. And then doubling down when called out? That's the part that actually does the damage. A bad apology is sometimes worse than no apology at all. #3. 10/10 — This is it. This is the whole thing. They brought it up first, which meant the other person didn't have to work up the courage to ask. They named the specific behavior, offered a plan to do better, AND asked what else was needed. And then — the other person co-regulated. They didn't punish, they met it with grace and offered support. This is two people actually trying. This is what we're aiming for.
