Dozens of European Parliament members walked into EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen’s annual State of the Union speech in France, wearing red shirts to draw a red line for Gaza and denounce Israel’s genocide. The symbolic protest was coordinated by the Left group in the Parliament and also involved members of the Socialist and Democrats (S&D) and the Greens. On Wednesday, Sept. 10, the lawmakers stood at the entrance of the plenary chamber in Strasbourg, holding a minute of silence for Palestinians killed in Israel’s genocide before filing into the chamber. The lawmakers said the protest was meant to demand stronger EU action, including an arms embargo on Israel, suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement and new sanctions. In her speech, von der Leyen proposed “bolder EU sanctions” against Israel, including partially suspending the EU’s trade agreement with Israel, sanctions on extremist ministers and violent settlers and also starting a Palestine Donor Group for reconstruction in Gaza. She also raised the possibility of cutting Israel from EU research programs such as Horizon Europe. The measures would pause EU money flowing into Israeli state institutions and suspend parts of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which gives Israeli exports reduced tariffs in Europe. In 2023, trade between the EU and Israel was worth nearly €46 billion, which is more than the annual GDP of countries like Croatia. Von der Leyen also called for an immediate ceasefire, endorsing a two-state solution, but also said she remains a “longstanding friend” of Israel and called Hamas “terrorists.” The proposed sanctions will now go to EU member states for debate, but critics have said the measures proposed remain insufficient in the face of Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Israel has now killed more than 64,718 Palestinians in Gaza, mostly women and children, and is now pounding Gaza City, which is now officially in man-made famine created by Israel, with bombs in preparation for its full take over of the city. #eu #europe #palestine #israel #fypp
