Actually the “church Latin “ is not an Italian version, it is the latest iteration of the real Latin, it never died, this is the new and updated Latin so it is the new official Latin.

Tete V. :
What some call “Church Latin” was used by commoners before Christianity. Classical Latin had formal uses. The Church came in later and used the “vulgar” pronunciation.

Is there a language that maintained the distinction between long and short vowels until today? Why are we so lazy? 😭

When I used to sing as a young boy we performed Carl Orf’s carmina burana, and we had to change how we pronounced the Latin we were used to because it used a German pronunciation as opposed to classical or liturgical

Can Italian speakers understand church Latin? No. When Ratzinger announced his retire, 2013, he read a letter in Latin (he could). In a press room full of Italians, no one understood anything except a single woman, erudite in theology (Giovanna Chirri), who translated the meaning to the other journalists.
