@alejandrocasaxamigo: adding to this very important conversation, inspired by @IG: marlene.ramir! if you actively tarnish our people’s outcomes because you had luck play in your favor, you are not the exception, luck just played a MASSIVE role. as a Latino that had the privilege to pursue higher education, I recognize how lucky I truly was. many of my friends grew up working multiple jobs to contribute to their families and were not granted that same opportunity I had. we all work extremely hard to build the lives we have, but let’s not forget how much luck plays a role in our socioeconomic outcomes, health, & mobility #latinos #highereducation #latina

As a Latina with a master’s degree, I have never thought less of those without higher education. Generational poverty plays a large role in the Latino community and sometimes working right after highschool is the only option that’s available. Paving the way in jobs and rooms where we were once not wanted in, is what’s most important and helping others along the way is key. And Latinos who deem other Latinos as “ghetto”, have some internalized racism.

If we can afford quinceañeras and a mamalona for the first born boy. we can afford to pay for school. That's my cut off line

While I agree with you wholeheartedly. I feel a bit torn when I see a Latino/a who has all the opportunities but chooses not to take them. I was raised by a single mom and currently pursuing my master's, so there is a sense of “why is X person not trying to do more when they can”? That doesn’t necessarily have to be in formal academia, but also a trade, especially with how expensive it is to be alive.

I really hold myself accountable from being classist, but so admit it’s hard when you, like them, also didn’t grow up with the privilege and exposure to higher ed, but still found every way to make it happen. I hate to see so much wasted potential.

100% I wish my mom was like that with me & my siblings. She never told us “échala ganas” never made us feel like we can be anything we wanted to be & wasn’t there emotionally & blamed it on her own mother but overall people don’t really understand how much a kid needs that support. Now that I’m older I just did it for myself

I just saw a video before this of some girl talking about “ghetto latinos” and they having a “victim mentality.” I love your perspective ty for speaking up!

I’m sorry but this endless victim complex and the excuses tied to it that we impose on ourselves is pathetic. We as a group collectively perform poorly academically so fewer of us have what it takes to go to college. That’s it. No oppression, no lack of resources, no victim fantasy required.

As a Latino who is a professor with a PhD in Neuroscience, I do a lot of community outreach in underprivileged communities. From what I’ve seen, it’s difficult to get through young Latinos because education isn’t a priority. But doesn’t mean I’ll give up. As long as I reach one kid.

I mean it doesn’t help that we are being told now that college doesn’t matter anymore and that attempting to do so will be a waste of time. I don’t believe in that, I even got an undergraduate degree for what it’s worth. It’s like American society expects Latinos to be mules for hard physical labor, that’s our positive stereotype 🙄.

Not luck buddy 😐 can’t put a blanket statement on all college graduates. First Gen graduate WITH no guidance. It’s not luck, it’s determination.

I think there’s definitely a distinction to be made between feeding into those hegemonic stereotypes and actively holding those within our community accountable for harmful rhetoric in the name of traditionalism

It just makes me frustrated that Latinos that are first generation have grown up seeing their parents struggle and still choose not to get an education. That alone should give you the will power to do better for them because they sacrificed everything! But I’ve seen it first hand in my community that people have become lazy and prefer to take the easy way out.

Education doesn’t exempt anyone from systems of oppression it just shifts how those systems interact with us. Some Latinos who view education as power may use it to distance themselves from others in their community, especially those who haven’t had access to the same opportunities. That mindset reflects privilege, not superiority. Especially when it comes to understanding systemic injustice or the lived experiences of marginalized groups. You can lack book education but still be educated. True empowerment comes from using our education to uplift our communities, not dismiss them.

education being undervalued in latino culture is the actual issue here. it's when they bash others for pursuing any sort of higher ed--claiming privilege and that education (even grade school) is unnecessary. majority of the time they're actually just mad they didn't take opportunities given to them. the system is against us but you can't focus on how much it's holding us back and blame other latinos for it instead of looking for ways to beat the system that took those opportunities away.
