Flat rate only works when there’s work to be done. If a technician shows up ready to work, but the shop can’t provide enough cars because of poor scheduling, weak marketing, high labor rates, or bad leadership, that technician can sit there making $0. Not minimum wage. Not a reduced rate. Zero. Technicians should absolutely be rewarded for efficiency and performance. But we shouldn’t be expected to absorb the financial consequences of business decisions we don’t control. If technicians are meant to carry the responsibility of flat rate, they better be provided with the opportunity to earn it. Flat rate shouldn’t protect bad leadership.
