I also think it's a generation issue, because as a GenX, we wanted to scope out the guy, or girl to see if they weren't some psycho, and if there was chemistry, ( especially a blind date!). And when I dated in the 80's, and 90's, it was just a coffee for me. I didn't want to get stuck in a situation, if the person wasn't to my liking, some sort of bad vibe, not clicking..I knew it was a short date, and then I could just get out of there fast!!
