@thisdayinwwi: May 15 1918 #OTD Near Souchez, David McLellan photos of a fake canvas and steel tree observation post. Used to observe German movements and to direct accurate fire. During the night an existing tree would be replaced with a fake observation post. IWM did a photo essay on tree observation posts. On the front they would copy an existing tree and then at night cut it down and erect the camouflaged tree as shown in the 1916 painting (IWM Art.IWM ART 6476 ) by Solomon J Solomon.
