I use it on vocals nearly always. Sometimes on acoustic guitars etc to make room for the bass but sparingly and to taste. I adjust when/if the mix sounds muddy to it up. Genre is part of it too, sometimes I need to make room for heavy sub-bass and move the other stuff out of the way with high pass.

I find folks often high pass stuff they should be doing a shelf on 9/10. Cutting everything is a case of mixing with your eyes
