This is an excerpt from a speech I delivered to the Humane Society earlier this year. Many years ago, when I adopted Rudy, I read essay about what it really means to love animals—ethically. And it suggested that in lieu of thinking of animals as merely our “property” or even our “pets,” instead of thinking of ourselves as “owners” or “dod moms,” we should think of these animals as refugees. Because we have created a world that is so hostile to them. And worse yet, we continue to create more and more and MORE dogs for our amusement and profit. And when we grow tired of them…? When there are way more of them than there are loving homes…? Then what happens…? Over 3 million dogs a year enter animal shelters in the United States alone. More than 390,000 of them end up getting euthanized because no one will care for them. And these are just dogs, of course. More than 6 million animals enter shelters every year here in just the United States. And almost a million of them are euthanized. When I think these numbers? Yes, I get angry and I get sad. Just like I angry and sad when I think about what it was like for Rudy when he was alone in the world. Rudy came to me after an unknown amount of time outdoors. He was picked up off the streets of Texas in June 2013. Do you know how hot it gets in Texas in June? The average temperature is 91° F. The first thing I noticed about him was that his skin was almost entirely black. I could hardly see any pink on his small frame. His ribs were poking out, his teeth were covered in tartar, and the fur around his paws was a burnt orange. Although OTAT estimated him to be around 6 years old, he wasn't neutered. He had a terrible cough that wracked his entire body every few minutes. It was the honor of my life to be Rudy’s guardian, to provide him sanctuary after everything he’d been through. #dogs #adoptdontshop #rescuedogs
