Shaun Ritterson was murdered on June 11, 1977. On June 10, 1977, Shaun left her apartment and headed to The Capri, a bar where a local band was performing. On June 12, 1977, George Childs and his son were driving when they passed a wooded slope. They spotted what appeared to be a body lying about ten feet down an embankment. Childs alerted a nearby resident, who called police. Officer Ellwood Barnhardt confirmed the discovery: a young woman, deceased and unclothed. Investigators collected physical evidence: two empty beer cans, a sunflower seed pouch, soil, and hair samples beneath the body. Shaun's body was found nude and face-down. She had frizzy, shoulder-length brown hair, silver-painted fingernails, pierced ears, and was wearing a 10-carat yellow-gold “LOVE” ring with a small diamond chip. On the evening of June 13, 1977, Shaun’s parents formally identified her body at the morgue. An autopsy revealed extensive, methodical violence. Shaun had suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest, and the removal of most of her lower internal organs with what was described as “deer-cutting precision.” A tan “Turkish” towel was found inside her abdominal cavity. She had bruising and hemorrhaging at the back of her scalp, suggesting blunt force trauma. There were small cuts on her right thumb and left pinky consistent with defensive wounds. Her body had a “washed out” appearance, possibly indicating cleaning of the body. Ant bites and drag marks on her buttocks suggested she was moved and may have been alive when the killer began removing her organs. Detectives canvassed homes and closed off the area for evidence recovery. They searched Shaun’s apartment and recovered a calendar with cryptic initials written on various dates, personal letters and clothing, stained fabrics later determined not to contain human blood, and tissue fragments in the sink, confirmed to be non-human. Investigators interviewed Shaun’s friends, acquaintances, and frequent companions to reconstruct her movements leading up to her death. They first suspected Shaun’s roommate, Richard Gittens, who had a black eye and scratches. He claimed the injuries were caused by a drunken fall. His alibi was confirmed by witnesses and he was cleared. Next, police looked at James Thomas McCann, a violent offender released on parole just three days before Shaun’s death. McCann had previously been convicted in a separate case in which he disemboweled a woman and beheaded her. But no physical evidence linked him to Shaun’s murder. Investigators then focused on Shaun’s uncle, Harry Ritterson. Shaun occasionally stayed with him at his home, and he was known to be aware of her social patterns. They believed Harry failed a polygraph test, although this information was never officially documented in court. Years later, DA Matt Weintraub publicly stated that authorities had considered a confrontation between Shaun and Harry, possibly involving “personal, intimate matters,” as a potential motive. However, Harry consistently denied any involvement and was never charged. In 2012, renewed public attention came after journalists Matt Coughlin and Laurie Mason Schroeder published a multi-part series titled “The Girl on Church Hill.” The DA’s Office reopened the case, hoping modern DNA testing could provide answers. Authorities sought a DNA sample from Harry Ritterson, who was elderly and living with cancer. Before investigators could secure a sample, Harry died in January 2013. Detectives obtained hair from his body at the funeral home, and forensic labs compared it against evidence collected in 1977. Results were inconclusive—neither confirming nor excluding Harry as the suspect. Shaun’s “LOVE” ring, recovered at the scene in 1977, had been retained in police evidence for over 44 years. At the request of Shaun’s sister, Grace, the DA’s Office formally returned the ring to the family. The murder remains unsolved. Shaun was 20 years old. #truecrime #truecrimetok #unsolved #murder #murdervictim
