for everyone wondering, there’s zero cell service in the north cascades. that’s why he would have used a payphone

Why do you do this stuff with now Sat comms? If you go in the ocean in FL without it you may not make it. Saftey 1st is only a few $100 more

Most people responding don’t understand WA backcountry. NCNP does not have cell service and is very remote from any infrastructure. It takes hours to traverse the park even by car. Early Winter Spires is intense and a top tier climbing destination. This was a tragedy with a lucky survivor.

PSA: 911 is free on payphones, always has been 🙄 there’s payphones near national parks & lots of other places for emergency reasons. I’ve seen them in Olympic National Park, Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Mt Rainier National Park, Yellowstone, Custer State Park, Badlands, at truck stops, driving through reservations…there’s many reasons payphones still exist, from emergencies like this to making it possible for missing/abducted/trafficked people to call for help

a lot of rural areas still have payphones. in cali, rural areas that lack cell service for long distances have emergency pay phones every few miles that are free

DOGE fired 10 of the 13 rangers that patrol this district, including the SAR team. 3.8 million acres. No help.

I work in Newhalem, I got to talk to the man who survived when he came back for his car days later. He was pretty beat up and was in very low spirits, I can only imagine.

I can’t imagine how painful life is going to be for the survivor now. Watching his friends die? How do you get over seeing something like that?

As a seasoned WA hiker and climber, this could definitely happen. Sat phones are extremely expensive. Someone in the group may have had one but the survivor unable to get to.
My heart goes out to those involved
