I studied History at Uni, and on a whim one semester I decided to take the elective “China and the World since 1949” to fill in some blind spots in my historical knowledge. Fortunately, the Prof spent the first lesson providing all of the same context you have in this video in great detail. Our entire class was stunned. You simply don’t learn this in school, and if we did, perhaps we would all be better equipped to deal with and UNDERSTAND China.

It was complicated as China would only trade in silver under their trade rules. The Chinese refused to trade European products for theirs. The emperor called them trinkets. Also a western had to go through a Chinese middleman always for trade. If a westerner learned Mandarin they were executed.

Just a small correction but a better start date for the second Sino-Japanese war would be 1931, with the Chinese fighting the Japanese in China's Northeast, this slowly spread with the Japanese attacking the east coast with the world only really taking note in 1937 when white concessions in Shanghai being attacked. Other things to note are that the Chinese pinned the bulk of the Japanese imperial army in a quagmire for a good seven years prior to that date and that the American's were imperial Japanese's largest arms dealer prior to 1941.

Great post, You filled in some gaps in my understanding of the history of China.It is easy to understand the importance of being the greatest military power on the planet. China, Russia and Africa have a lot in common with the pain inflicted by Europe.They have military supremacy, and the old Colonial powers need to keep very quiet.
