Throwing it back to one of the most alluring deep-sea fish we’ve ever seen 🤩🎣 Back in 2004, our team of midwater biologists was exploring the midnight zone with the remotely operated vehicle Tiburon when they happened upon a rarely seen dreamer anglerfish (Oneirodes sp.) 1,457 meters (4,780 feet) underwater. It’s a rare treat to encounter a deep-sea anglerfish, and this sighting was even more special—this archival footage represents the only time we’ve observed an anglerfish deploying their signature luminescent lure. Food is scarce in the deep sea, so animals get creative to find a meal. Instead of chasing down prey, deep-sea anglerfishes go fishing. The first ray of an anglerfish’s dorsal fin is modified into a filament like a fishing pole. At the tip is a sac of glowing bacteria, called an esca. The luminous lure entices small fishes and crustaceans to come closer, then the anglerfish’s massive mouth and sharp teeth snap shut for a meal. In nearly four decades of ocean exploration with advanced underwater robots, MBARI scientists have logged just a handful of encounters with these unique fishes.
