I come from a loooong line of southern white poverty, and I swear I realize every day how much of what I was taught growing up was heavily influenced by Black american culture, because I’ve always known not to split the pole.

I had no idea! This is huge Appalachian lore as well. When we split the pole, one person has to say “Bread and butter” and the other person has to say “Come to supper”. Of course, escaped enslaved people used to end up in the Appalachians bc my people hated authority and would not allow rich whites to come into the mountains. So this could be lore handed down from those survivors who found freedom!

I saw a video a while ago that in addition to all the information that you gave, also said that when enslaved people were being transported to different areas, they would also split poles And families were split due to those reasonings

I never knew this started as a black thing... not sure how else to put that. but the only time I ever dealt with that was walking with my GF/friend don't remember which she was at that point but she literally pulled me back around and around and the poll ... never know it could of meant such a big thing. 😢
