I’ve struggled with OCD & GAD for years and unfortunately it can sometimes impact the relationships I have. It can be so exhausting & draining, but you aren’t alone if you relate these are some things that have helped me. - therapy: talking things out with an unbiased professional & learning about my mental health diagnosis and learning coping mechanisms/techniques. - journalling, I started to not trust myself and my own opinions (my therapist said this is common with OCD) so keeping a journal has actually been really beneficial because I can voice my opinions and read them back to see if what I was feeling was based in reality or not. - meditation, I really struggle with this icl, but it has really helped me a lot when I can focus on it. - wind down rituals, a lot of my worst spirals happen at night, I learnt that the best way to cope with this is just to avoid it happening completely. Not being on my phone at night, taking some magnesium or herbal tea to unwind, and reading a book that I like, also random, but I don’t have lights on at all in my room, I have a little lamp and candles. I genuinely have to put my phone away at least an hour before bed every night, but it stops my overthinking in its tracks because I’m so tired lol. - writing down my fears, similar to journalling I suppose but sometimes I just write down the fear or thought, and offer alternatives because my brain naturally goes to the worst case scenarios, but I offer myself the best case ones too override that. I tell myself “what makes the worst one more likely, they’re all hypothetical, none of this is real.” - recognise it’s an OCD thought immediately & shut it down. Sometimes I will literally say out loud “Shutup.” Lol. And I will also just have to sit and talk aloud to myself, I will say “this is a thought, this isn’t real. The more you think it, the more you will be affected, stop.” Sometimes that does work tbh, I will swiftly distract myself afterwards to. Usually by walking and leaving the environment I was in to change the scenery a lil. - talking to friends, this one can be tough and I understand that because in the past I felt like I’m just repeating the same anxieties and I felt like such a burden. But as I’ve got an older I realise that I would never judge anybody that I’m friends with for their mental health struggles, and anyone that would judge you is not anyone that you deserves your friendship! Talk it out, especially if your OCD is concerning a loved one, real or not your emotions and feelings are real, and usually you can just feel the way left off you once you express your thoughts. there’s honestly probably a couple more I could list, but these are the first ones that come to mind based on my experience. You are not alone.🤍
