I was raised in the south and 1000% had to unlearn a lot of biases that I was raised with.

Right. Many racists think that “racism is wrong” and they’re so offended if someone calls them racist. Being uncomfortable is the ultimate crime.

Most havent done any level of introspection, because it can be uncomfortable accepting that you’ve done, said, participated in harmful things. Growth comes on the other side of that discomfort!

That's why any talk about racism makes them uncomfortable. They're usually the ones that say why do you have to make everything about race. Racism makes them feel uncomfortable so they really like to confront it.

Most racists know racism is unacceptable so they find other ways to critize other races indirectly in ways that are more “acceptable”.

Yes. Which is why they don’t understand what microaggressions are. Being a biracial person, that appears white to white people, really gives you a different perspective on this.

You’re 100% right which is why we still have racism. There are so many people who don’t think they are racist. They don’t see it so they don’t change.

It is a lot easier to have evidence that someone definitely is racist, but almost impossible to have sufficient evidence that someone is not, especially if you see it as a spectrum.

I know you're right, but I find it so hard to believe that people have absolutely no awareness of their biases. obviously some slip by all of us, but NO clue? really? 😭 how??

yeah, if you're a white person born in the United States, you have some level of racism, period, end of sentence. It's a fact just by the very nature of how this country operates. If you choose anti-racism, that's a full time job you're picking up for the rest of your life. There will always be something to unpack and work through, and the second you think you've done enough to be free of criticism, you're back down at the bottom.

yep. we can’t opt out of being racist. we can actively work on being anti racist but we will always benefit from racial inequality whether we want to or not

Racism is also a system. I don’t think ppl understand how racism plays into our everyday lives. It has to be taught to understand racism in the context of history and personal experience.

I find using similes to sexism helps wyt women process this better. It’s “not all men” but the threat is still present. we can’t KNOW and men have an unreliable understanding of how women experience their presence. Same with racism.
