Finch normally has really good points but this one rubbed me the wrong way, my earphones are a part of my disablity equipment, im autistic with little to no verbal ability for strangers, i physically cant communicate i cant speak so personally it feels really strange to for people to expect me to take of my headphones for any reason because even if its for help i do not have the ability to help

Idk if it’s a culture thing but here in the uk, striking up a conversation with a stranger out in public is incredibly rare. You’d be considered weird for doing so.

I had someone tell me “put that phone down. You’re probably not even talking to someone” (didn’t even have headphones on, just held my phone to my ear) I was taking with my parent because a family member had died. The guy looked SHOCKED we I just stared at him and told him what I was talking about.

most female presenting people are not stopped to have a nice conversation. they stop you to give you uncomfortable unwarranted conversation. headphones help with this issue.

Just don’t be a baby about it honestly, a conversation in public is usually a couple minutes and could be as simple as somebody asking where’d you get something you are wearing. If you label someone as a narcissist or rude for doing as simple as that you’re a man child. Going outside and expecting nobody to interact with you whatsoever just cause you have headphones is wildly delusional.

the way this is stitched is misleading, he doesn’t get his whole point out before the interjection so i cannot agree. people are allowed to speak to you in public headphones or not. it’s up to you to speak and decline, or speak and volley with the person speaking. it’s really quite simple

i wear headphones bcs i cannot take the noises of the outside world and my thoughts combined- also i just hate talking to people- i get nervous ordering stuff in McDonald's, okay? the only space where I'm comfortable talking to people, is around people i already know, art schools, pride parades, and conventions.
