In true fashion of the genre of music, there’s a lot going on in this print. Harley and Justin joined Jared in the print shop at the Sacramento History Museum because April 29th is Duke Ellington’s birthday and April 30th is International Jazz Day! For today, Harley discussed Duke’s impact on jazz and how he developed the orchestral technique with the trumpet player Buber Miley to mimic the sound of a train by using a toilet plunger while playing a trumpet. The wah-wah sound will carry on into rock music with guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix. In the video, Jared letterpress printed a photo engraving of a train going off the rails. The text above states, “Happy International Jazz Day!” and was typeset in 60 point Caslon. This was printed with purple oil base ink using our Washington hand press. The Harley White Jr. Orchestra will be performing again at the Sacramento History Museum in June.
