Regent’s Park. The beating heart of London cycling. Or at least a very sweaty appendix. Every cyclist in the capital has heard the myth. A 4.5km tarmac loop, practically sacred, where wattage dreams are made and laps are repeated until your soul detaches. Naturally, I had to see what all the fuss was about. So I set my alarm for an ungodly hour and joined the Lycra pilgrimage. By just after 7am it was already 26 degrees and the park was absolutely teeming with cyclists. Hundreds of us. Circling the Outer Loop like caffeinated moths around a slightly disappointing flame. The route itself is, how shall I put this, fine. Scenic if you enjoy iron railings and the occasional lost tourist. It’s also littered with traffic lights and made spicier by a charming selection of roadworks. Imagine a crit race designed by the local council. I did about 70km of loops before curiosity got the better of me and I wandered over to the Inner Circle. It’s a touch over a kilometre long and feels like a slow descent into madness. There is a café though, which is great if you like your flat whites with a side of midlife crisis. But honestly, the real reason to come here is not the route. It’s the atmosphere. That peculiar buzz of shared suffering. The mutual understanding between strangers that yes, we are all here, voluntarily, at sunrise, wearing skin-tight clothing, riding in literal circles. And somehow, we love it. So is Regent’s Park the best place to cycle in London? Maybe not. But if you want somewhere central, traffic-light friendly and filled with the relentless optimism of weekend warriors, this is the spot. Just don’t forget your sunglasses. Not for the sun. For the blinding glare off all that Lycra
