So Dust is essentially an energy source that is mined in RWBY. Weiss belongs to a family that runs a company that mines for dust and sells them. Weiss is able to store multiple dust vials in her weapon and used them in her attacks, mainly elemental attacks but she specializes in using ice. She can use dust to coat the blade with the element for various attacks or techniques, but she also uses it in her semblance. Reloading the weapon is like reloading a revolver hence why the chamber can spin and she uses this to switch between different dust vials.

So the reason Myrtenaster is viable for Weiss is that Weiss is much stronger than the average human thanks to her Aura. Her Aura also protects her from potential hand guard stabs. so in rwby it's okay.

The round handle (as opposed to an oval) is a big design problem. You have no way to know your edge alignment other than to look at your blade, which is probably not where you want your eyes in a fight.

i would says dust is mana with elemental powers. as it a component used to trigger different effects for their weapon or their semblance. dust+ aura or semblance = magic effect.

dust is... it's magic dust that has control over elements. the people in their universe use it for everything, they also have a special power called a semblance that can be changed by dust for different effects. She summons pads( that have alot of different uses) and creatures with hers. Also they protect their bodys with a sheild ( made from life energy) so she wouldn't stab her hand.
