Today was my last day of my pediatric rotation. It was a good month, but some of what I saw has been hard to stop thinking about. Kids already dealing with obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Families trying to figure out what to do, often without much practical nutrition education. These conditions have multiple causes, but food is a part of the conversation we cannot keep brushing past. Children depend on adults for what’s in the fridge, what’s packed in their lunch, and what’s served at school. That’s a huge responsibility. When breakfast options include donuts, muffins, and French toast sticks, I think we need to ask whether we’re giving kids the best start to their day. And we need to look just as closely at what’s being served at home. Parents need practical guidance they can actually use and afford. Schools need the funding and standards to serve better meals. And we, as physicians, need to make time to teach families about nutrition before their child’s lab work becomes concerning. I’m leaving this rotation even more convinced that prevention needs to start early. Our kids deserve to grow up with the knowledge, food, and support to be healthy.
