Matriarchy. Nothing gets better until we accept matriarchy.

I think it makes a lot of sense. The idea of improving and reforming human nature has been around for a long time and humans are still pretty much the same.

I think human nature is trying to improve but the patriarchial system we’re suppressed under isn’t

reminds me of the South Park episode where they get rid of religion in the future and then have wars about science like we did about religion.

I think this is a very dangerous theory that can easily get abuse as it can be used as an excuse to look away or avoid accountability / responsibility, especially by people who are not part of an oppressed group.

I believe that certain people are progressing. But as a whole - no. Hell no. There will always be people whose fear is greater than their love and curiosity, and thus we as a species will not progress.

I think this is valid. I think, at least before we were making things like pyramids that lasted 1000s of years, and now we are making plastic forks that will last 1000s of years

I think this is a view of a white colonizer, the understanding that conquer and destruction is in us, and we need to be that way to succeed.

So I will turn 70 in November and I’ve been reflecting on life and I came to that very conclusion that human beings are never going to be any different than they currently are because they’re no different than they were when I was young

Evolution is a long and slow process and requires physical and mental changes in dna that don’t occur in a few generations - or even a few hundred. We are still stuck in the same nature as centuries ago

I completely agree. But it doesn't feel quite as linear as that. There is always pockets of progress but it doesn't get far. But the more we know the better.

this kind of defeatism turns people away from participating in struggle. social progress does exist, it can be won through class struggle. it is a real material question of improving this world, not an idealist utopia

There seems to be a confusion here between two arguments:
1) Humans are not progressing at all (objectively false in terms of life expectancy, quality of life, and total violent death rates)
2) Humans are progressing but it's only due to technological advancement and human nature is not improving at all even as a result of the technological advancement (what is the evidence for this? what about the counter-evidence of much lower homicide rates? why does it matter if technology is the only cause if there is progress?)
The "just as violent" part of this is false when it comes to interpersonal violence like homicide rates (Google: Homicide rates over the centuries). When it comes to war, technology and high populations made things much worse from the invention of gunpowder until Hitler, but war deaths have since massively declined along with homicide rates. I would agree that "human nature" isn't the part that changes (by definition) but human culture and technology have changed together and the technological changes by themselves often make things worse. Cultural changes have also been mixed but the ones that are as directly caused by technology seem better (changed beliefs about slavery & democracy, etc).

something about this apathetic, pessimistic take gives me a sense of othering. it seems like certain people once again believe their history is everyone’s history and so progress for everyone else is more of the same for them.

Consider the starfish story. Even if the cycle of revolutions and empires will always continue, so too can the cycle of people helping or saving at least one other person. Keep going, keep trying.
