The UK government has issued a heightened alert for British farms after a “worrying” outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) was confirmed in Germany. This highly contagious livestock virus, which devastated UK farming in 2001, has sparked fears of a similar crisis. The Threat of FMD The virus was detected in a herd of water buffalo near Berlin on January 10, prompting swift action from the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Measures include: •	Suspending imports of cattle, sheep, and pigs from Germany. •	Restricting personal imports of animal products from across the EU. Farming Minister Daniel Zeichner emphasized the government’s commitment, saying: “The government will do whatever it takes to protect our nation’s farmers… Risk levels to the UK have been increased to medium.” Lessons From the Past The UK has been free of FMD since 2007. However, the memory of the 2001 epidemic, when six million animals were culled and the economy suffered a £12.8bn loss, still looms large over the farming community. National Farmers’ Union (NFU) president Tom Bradshaw praised the government’s quick action but stressed the importance of border security to prevent illegal meat imports. He stated: “With so much uncertainty about where this horrendous disease is and where it came from, it’s vital the government maintains constant contact with counterparts in the EU.” Farmers on High Alert Pig farmer Chris Fogden from Thetford shared his concerns: “There’s an awful lot of illicit imports, and the policing of that is not very good. We are very, very concerned to have foot-and-mouth so near.” Biosecurity Measures Urged While FMD poses no risk to human health or food safety, it remains a severe threat to livestock. The UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Prof Christine Middlemiss, urged farmers to: •	Maintain strict biosecurity protocols. •	Watch for clinical signs of FMD. •	Report any suspicions to the Animal and Plant Health Agency immediately. She added: “We have robust contingency plans in place to protect farmers and Britain’s food security.” A Call to Action Farmers and government agencies alike are on high alert to prevent the spread of this devastating disease. The question remains: Are current measures enough to stop history from repeating itself? #FootAndMouth #UKFarming #Biosecurity #FMDOutbreak #Livestock #FoodSecurity #UKNews #GermanyOutbreak #ForYou #FYF #FYP #ukfarmers #farmers #nofarmersnofoodnofuture #savefarmers
