These guys get caught in a RIP and are helplessly doing the wrong thing to self rescue. Thankfully they get out safely but we show this video to help you understand the power and movement of the water in a RIP. What is a RIP current? First important point about a RIP, it’s a current NOT a tide- RIPtide is a song by Vance Joy. RIPs (or rip currents) are powerful, narrow channels of water that flow away from the beach. They are a natural part of the ocean and can form on any beach where waves are over knee height. When waves break, they push water up the beach. That water has to go somewhere so it flows back out to sea, usually in a narrow path. That’s the RIP. 🌊 The bigger the waves, the stronger the RIP. 🌊 A RIP can move faster than an Olympic swimmer. 🌊 It usually flows only as far as the breaking waves, not miles out to sea. If you get caught in a RIP: •	Don’t panic. Stay calm and keep breathing by floating on your back. •	Don’t try to swim directly back to shore against the current, you’ll tire quickly. •	Swim sideways, parallel to the beach, until you’re out of the RIP and into the incoming waves. •	Or float with it, either on your back or if you have a board or floatation, the flow will take you out but the circular motion will probably bring you back in with the wave motion. 👋wave for help 🏄‍♂️ Surfers use RIPs to paddle out quickly beyond the breaking waves—then catch a wave back to shore! Next time you’re at a beach with waves, take a moment to look: 👉 Can you spot a RIP? Deeper, faster flowing water, waves smaller in that section. #watersafety #drowningprevention #beachsafety #knowaboutrips #stopdrowning
