“How Can He Sleep Through Anything” #Science Source: PMID: 20692606 Some people can sleep through loud noises due to their brain’s ability to produce more sleep spindles, which are bursts of brain activity that occur during non-REM sleep. Sleep spindles play a key role in protecting the brain from external disturbances, like noise, by inhibiting sensory information from reaching higher brain centers. This process is heavily regulated by the thalamus, a brain structure that acts as a sensory gateway. Role of Sleep Spindles: Sleep spindles are brief, high-frequency brain waves generated by the thalamus and cortex. They help in maintaining sleep by blocking sensory inputs, such as sounds, from waking the sleeper. People who produce more sleep spindles, or have stronger spindle activity, are better able to filter out disturbances, allowing them to stay asleep despite environmental noises. Thalamic Activity and Noise Filtering: The thalamus is responsible for relaying sensory information (like sound) to the cerebral cortex, which processes this information consciously. During sleep, sleep spindles generated in the thalamus reduce the flow of sensory data to the cortex, essentially "shielding" the brain from external stimuli.
