Take Scarborough Shoal—China forcibly took it in 2012, despite it being well within the Philippines’ 200-nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). China is geographically far from these waters, yet they act like they own it. Let’s be clear: these islands are not abandoned rocks—they’re part of our sovereign territory, and they were meant to be inhabited by Filipinos, not militarized by a foreign power. The Philippines adheres to international law, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). And in 2016, we won the arbitration case proving China has no legal basis to be there. But does China care? No—because their tactic is deception and occupation. Here’s another example: In the early ’90s, China crept into the Mischief Reef, also inside our EEZ. They claimed to be building simple bamboo shelters for fishermen. Fast forward—those “shelters” are now military outposts. That’s how China operates: lie, build, occupy, and weaponize. Sneaky, shameless, and dangerous.
