The increasing number of women receiving autism diagnoses is often presented as evidence of overdiagnosis or the influence of social media. But increased recognition is not the same as overdiagnosis. For decades, autism research and diagnostic frameworks were shaped primarily by male samples and male presentations. Research has repeatedly found that autistic girls and women are more likely to be overlooked, identified later, or excluded by traditional assessment practices. Social media did not create these experiences. For many women, it provided the first language to describe experiences they had carried their entire lives. I was autistic before I had a diagnosis. I was struggling before I had an explanation. Receiving a diagnosis did not create my pain; it finally gave me a way to understand it. And to every late-diagnosed autistic woman who has felt invalidated by the recent news and discussion: no research article, headline, official statement, or public debate can erase what you lived through. It cannot make your pain less real or take away the years you spent trying to survive without understanding why life felt so difficult. Your pain was real. Your experience was real. You do not have to prove either of them to deserve understanding, support, and a place in this community. You belong here. Sources: D’Mello et al., 2022; Cook et al., 2024; Fyfe et al., 2026. Context note: This is Annika-first content—a window into one autistic and ADHD life, not a definition of autism or ADHD. I am white, relatively low support needs, and not physically disabled. My perspective is not universal, and what works for me may not work for you. Please take what resonates and make room for experiences different from mine. #annikaunmasked #unmasking #autisminwomen #autism #audhd
