Episode 016: The Baby Is Choking. Why Not Push Her Belly? 🎧 The muffled music you hear in the audio represents her blocked windpipe: it opens up the moment the food comes out, and the cry is her first breath of air. Each thump is a back blow and each puff is a chest push. (How far the food moves and the bruise on her liver are an illustration.) What NOT pushing her belly does: 1️⃣ For babies under 1, belly pushes (the Heimlich) aren't recommended. Use back blows and chest thrusts instead (American Heart Association + American Academy of Pediatrics, 2025). 2️⃣ A baby's liver is big and her ribs don't fully cover it, so a belly push could tear it (American Heart Association). 3️⃣ Back blows and chest thrusts are done with her head lower than her body, and you keep repeating them until it comes out (MedlinePlus). What to do: if she's coughing hard or crying, let her cough and watch her closely. If she can't cry, cough or breathe, have someone call 911 and start right away: lay her face down along your forearm, resting on your thigh, head lower than her body, holding her jaw (not her throat). Give up to 5 firm back blows between her shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. Turn her face up, head still lower, and give up to 5 chest thrusts with the heel of one hand in the middle of her chest, just below the nipple line. Repeat until it comes out. Only take it out of her mouth if you can see it (never sweep blindly). If she goes limp or stops responding, call 911 and start infant CPR. Even if it comes out and she seems fine, call her doctor (MedlinePlus). In a US study of 111,914 ER visits for children choking on food (2001-2009), kids aged 1 or younger made up 37.8% of them (Pediatrics, 2013). Be honest: would you have pushed her belly, or done back blows? 👇 If You Like This Content, Please Follow Me!! #babychoking #firstaid #liver #pixelart #Science
