Is it possible to have natural gas for day to day but to also have a backup tank of propane? Or are the systems too dissimilar?

You didn’t mention that it depends on what’s available in your area. You can only get natural gas if you live closer to the city, country folks are pretty much forced to use propane

If you're lucky and have an oil well on your property like my grandpa does, it produces natural gas and you don't have to pay for it. But you gotta be lucky to have an oil well.

Small tank is illegal it has to be 5ft from a ignition source which would be that ac unit

yeah not all propane takes are burried. i have 1000 gallons above ground. dont care how it looks. hard to open the hatch in the winter when its buried.

Smaller multiple tanks are better as it will cost less to be refilled less to replace and easier to carry and maintain and you can build a small good looking shed for it 😅 with small ones you can send some one to refill it in stead of ordering a truck 😅

Now gas is good and those additions to the home are cool in all but remember every line that comes from the private side of the meter is strictly the homeowners responsibility. Utility locators cannot mark that unless the are private side locators (which aren’t cheap) so 811 is useless for those lines
