Newhart had two popular shows, each ran for years: one where he was married, and the 2nd with a colorful cast of characters. The finale in the 2nd, at the end, he turns on the light, and he's in the set of the 1st show and explains the 2nd show to the 1st wife, implying the 2nd show was a dream he had. Suzy was the 1st wife.

It was also a little jab (or a big jab) at Dallas, who had just brought Bobby back from the dead by having the entire season, where Bobby died, be a dream.
