On April 9th, 2025, the Home Office implemented several changes to the Skilled Worker visa rules, particularly impacting care workers and their sponsors. The most significant change is that care providers in England must now prioritize recruitment from within the UK, specifically those already on Skilled Worker visas, before seeking to sponsor workers from abroad. This means employers must first prove they have attempted to recruit through regional partnerships before being able to sponsor a new overseas care worker. Additionally, the minimum salary threshold for care workers increased to £25,000 per year, and the Certificate of Sponsorship fee also rose. Key Changes: Priority for Domestic Recruitment: Care providers in England must now prioritize recruiting care workers already in the UK on Skilled Worker visas. Proof of Recruitment Efforts: Employers need to demonstrate to the relevant regional partnership that they have actively tried to recruit locally before sponsoring overseas workers. Minimum Salary Increase: The minimum salary for Skilled Worker visa holders, including those in the care sector, increased to £25,000 per year. Increased Certificate of Sponsorship Fee: The fee for a Certificate of Sponsorship has also increased. Visa Fee Increases: Immigration and visa fees were increased by 7%. These changes are intended to prioritize domestic workers and reduce reliance on overseas recruitment. Employers need to adapt their recruitment strategies to comply with the new requirements, which include working with regional partnerships and ensuring they meet the new minimum salary requirements.
