it's also the fact that our voting is accessible. it's always on a weekend with a lot of polling locations, with options to vote early or do a mail in ballot. yes it's mandatory, but I think Americans assume it's just as hard for us to vote as it is for them

you don't have to vote you can leave it blank you need to turn up & be ticked off to prove you weren't denied right to vote like in other countries

…and mandatory voting in a preferential system, and voting on a Saturday, and voting is so accessible in many locations, AND the democracy sausage.

You also have to appeal to the middle. Too extreme and you’ll get votes, but normally not enough.

Making choosing your dictator mandatory is not democratic. A no confidence option should be included on ballot papers 🤔.

One important thing about mandatory voting is that it puts the onus on the AEC to ensure everyone is capable of voting - voter suppression is much much harder.

We vote according to a sliding scale of discomfort. Which person is going to inconvenience us less.

Mandatory voting and ranked choice would be great if it could get implemented in the U.S.

British person here, I wish we had mandatory voting. It does my head in that a vocal minority are pushing our government further and further right 😱

As a former campaign organiser for a political party in the UK, can confirm. About 70-90% of actual campaign work is telling people there's an election on and to go vote (selectively to the people you want ofc)

do y’all get time off to vote? I feel like part of our problem is that we’re relatively poor and can’t afford to take time off work to vote unless it’s one of the big elections

Voting is not mandatory in Australia. Turning up and having your name crossed off the roll is mandatory. Even then it’s a $20 fine.

if you are a citizen then you must vote, must pay tax, must defend the country when called upon, and must serve on a jury and called up. Those are the 4 civic duties.

Preferential voting is not even remotely complicated. Apathy is the problem. It would take 10 to 15 minutes to research and understand. First you have to care and be honest.
