🔥 Jaw or neck tension? Your TONGUE might actually help stretch it! Your tongue doesn’t work in isolation. It interacts with the floor-of-mouth muscles and hyoid bone, which serves as an attachment point for several muscles throughout the jaw and neck. 💡 Here’s what’s happening: When you stick your tongue out and down, you tension muscles in the floor of the mouth that attach to the hyoid. ⚡ This changes tension around the hyoid and surrounding muscles. ⚡ One of those muscles is the omohyoid, which runs from the hyoid, through a fascial sling, toward the shoulder blade. ⚡ By combining tongue, neck, and shoulder blade positioning, you can create a stretch through this entire region. 🛠️ Try this stretch: ✅ STEP 1: Arm behind your back Bring the arm on the side you’re stretching behind your back. ✅ STEP 2: Shoulder blade DOWN Gently depress the shoulder blade to tension the lower end of the omohyoid. ✅ STEP 3: Look UP + AWAY Lift your head and gently turn away from the side you’re stretching. ✅ STEP 4: Tongue OUT + DOWN Stick your tongue all the way out and point it downward. Only open your mouth as much as necessary. ✅ STEP 5: HOLD Maintain the position for up to 60 seconds as tolerated, without forcing the tongue, jaw, or neck. 🔥 Put it all together: Arm behind back → shoulder blade down → look up + away → tongue out + down → HOLD. The goal is to create a controlled stretch through the hyoid, omohyoid, and surrounding neck tissues that may contribute to feelings of tension around the jaw, side of the neck, or throat. Persistent difficulty swallowing or a new/unexplained lump sensation should be medically evaluated rather than assumed to be muscular. #JawTension #NeckTension #NeckPain #TMJ #PhysicalTherapy
