The American lawn is the law in many places. In others it’s the rule of the HOA. So much for freedom.

What baffles me with these front lawns is the emptiness. Here in Sweden, the front of the houses are usually filled with small trees, flowers, bikes, footballs, blooming bushes, small tables and chairs, kids toys and it's practically mandatory to have at least 1 big pot outside your door filled with flowers.

I've always thought American lawns look so sterile, for a lack of a better word. It's too perfect and lacks life. Almost robotic.

Mine is more like the German one. It really depends on what part of the US you live in and the neighborhood.

Americans care about how others look at them. We care about ourselves and what we like. America is so fake.

Germans have no space for big lawns. 31% of Gemans live in a single family dwelling vs 67% of Americans. Plus space and houses are smaller. Germany also has a bunch of laws about outdoor chemicals. Also weird is a value statement. Surprised Germany doesn’t require a license to own a lawn

It’s interesting that you differentiate between “yards” and “gardens”. In the UK the land around a house is always called a “garden”. A yard is specifically a very small paved area behind a terraced house. Also the UK LOVES gardening so many gardens are beautiful.

It’s not like this in Portland, OR🇺🇸. V few people have grass lawns, + the ones that do let them go brown during the summer to conserve water. Most people have native flowers, bushes, trees, + ground cover like clover. But I know that’s the exception in the US.

Not to mention all the noise pollution in North America from everyone mowing. It’s horrible for nature and ecosystems

American lawns are a perfect mirror of American suburbia culture. nothing out of place, manicured perfection, style over substance.

The reason why the middle class have lawns is the same reason why they buy Kia’s. Trying to look like they have more money which is a frivolous activity. We’re so rich we don’t need a garden.
