Not wrong to request rent but very wrong to make only OP pay rent while his siblings got off. And sounds like the parents asked for too much rent if he had no time between school and work.

As you grow up you're gonna thank your parents. Parties are not important, friends aren't that important. What's important is securing a good future & your parents made sure you did that.

Yeah it’s cool that they gave him the money back but no amount of money can make up for lost time and experiences

everyone has to pay rent... I'm paying rent right now it's not the end of the world. he'd probably be paying more if he didn't live in his parents house. let's be for real

People on this app are young, but realize once you graduate college, you're working 9-5 until you're dead. it kills your social life. college is the one time you have total freedom

people on the parent's side: its not that they charged him rent, they charged him so much in rent that he had to work so much that he couldn't do anything except study & work, they definitely decimated his mental health & for what? they didn't even tell him that this is what was gonna happen, they obviously didn't need the money cuz they gave it back to him which means that they didn't have to charge him as much as they did. they could've actually put it in an interest account & then they didn't do it for his sister??? "wElL He wOuLdVe PaiD tHe SaMe tO rEnT a PlAcE" yeah, a whole place, he wouldve had a whole place or he could've had a share house where he wouldve had more freedom. idk if it lists the costs but my 1st rent (I was lucky) was $300 a month, & my current one is $700 a month in a share house. they lied to him. & before u say anything, my parents did the same to me, except they told me upfront. that all the rent that they charged me would be available for my rental deposit & it was helpful & it meant I was less stressed unlike this guy who was overstressed. & it was like $200 a month (didn't count it as my 1st cuz it didn't count)

One of the cornerstones of university and young adulthood is to experience things, have fun, travel, go to parties, socialise w people your age, make friends you'll have for life etc. His parents robbed him of that. Hope OP allows himself to relax a bit :(

I don’t think it’s unfair when every other place he could have stayed would charge him rent and they gave it back to him. He is ready to start his life and not live off of his parents🤷‍♀️collage isnt supposed to be fun.

there's nothing wrong with doing this. the problem is the charged him too much. it's all well and good to reach your children financial responsibility but tell him he needs to give the and entire paycheck and more is outrageous

I’m just in the middle with this story just bc he would have probably workerd just as hard if he moved out? My thought is at least he gets the money but it’s also really such a weird thing maybe if the parent told him of their plans idk….

I like the idea of charging your child rent and giving back to them in the end to teach them a lesson but if they’re already going to school for studying then they have enough to worry about.

a lot of people in these comments don’t understand how life really works. Although you yourself might not find partying fun, although you yourself might not feel the need to be social and meet people or hang out with your friends, a lot of people do. Imagine if you were forced to spend all your money you saved in your youth to pay twice what you pay in rent. But hey you get surprised with it in retirement… When the kids you care about are grown and you can’t take them on vacations, when that concert that was coming to your town that you’ve loved since a child is now too expensive. It’s the same situation. OP had his youth and what he personally finds fun taken away, your not young forever remember that

The biggest benefit to college is being able to shake hands with people who are very above your social class to give you a chance to get a job when you’re done. He lost out on all of that.

I don’t pay rent, but I know people that have to pay rent so they work and study at the same time. I’m not saying it is easy (I can barely sometimes just with my studies, I cant imagine having to work on top of that) but those guys still have social lives and they are the ones who host the parties. It sucks that your parents ask you for rent and I think that’s ridiculous, but at the same time you can still have a social life

the people who are commenting don't understand, some things are only age appropriate at a certain age. you can't do it when you are 25 or 30

I kind of share the opinion that OP is dramatic about the situation. All I'm saying is like he learnt the value of money and hard work and he still reaped the rewards on his own despite the parents wanting to give him all that money back. I understand and respect his emotions behind it but honestly there's worse things that happen in families than your parents giving you that money back and blocking them for it is in my my opinion such uncalled for response. I fundamentally respect resilience and hard work and think it's much better for OPs family to have prepared him for the real world than to go party and have a busy college social life and not be prepared for life. And the reality of life is that your always going to be crazy busy and crazy unhappy because the world was designed that way so you have to find a way to make your own happiness. You can either rely on others and get disappointed or know that you're resilient enough to actually live life independantly and choose to make the best out of a situation.

One thing that no one pointed out, is that socializing in college is networking and brings opportunities to you later in life.
