I, for the life of me, can’t figure out comp titles for my book. It’s killing me

My book can only comp to Harry Potter, hunger games, and lord of the rings, and I know it sounds crazy, but Rich Dad Poor Dad too.

…My main project could probably be compared to one series and two tv shows, lol.

But why do I now want to read a book that's Twister meets Tortured Poets Department?? 😅

One of my books is historical horror and I struggled to find ANY comps from the last decade. What do you do if you simply can’t find anything?

Can comp titles be from self-pub authors?

Wait so if the novel im writing is literary fiction but the themes within it are niche and basically only genuinely comparable to books such as The Brothers Karamazov (Dostoevsky) and The Picture of Dorian Gray (Wilde) would a literary agent understand and allow it?

This makes me wish there was a website for comp titles like there is for finding agents. Lemme plug in my detailed synopsis and some sample chapters and give me a list to read and choose from 🤣😭

What is the best way to discover/look up comp titles to your book series if it isn’t fully romance or mystery/adventure (for example) if you aren’t reading every book on the market and might not be aware of something similar?

Wait I’m confused what actually makes a book young adult vs new adult vs adult if intimacy has nothing to do with it? Is it solely about the age of the protagonist?

I feel gaslight by book searching on google, because I somehow can't find recent experimental fiction that's fantasy/sci fi. Every list I find has books from the 80's/90's. 💀 Also doesn't help my beta's keep comparing my vibe/world building to Terry Pratchett, since. Y'know. He's not going to be publishing anything I can comp to any time soon. 🫠

Other question: Is it possible to have illustration throughout your book? (like 3 or so, drawings of important scenes) especially if your an artist and doesn't need another person to draw them

When choosing comp titles for a dystopian novel, can I only choose other dystopians? Or could I include a SciFi title or 2 since dystopian is technically a subset of SciFi?

So I’ve been trying to write my first novel, and I keep scrapping things because I can’t seem to feel confident in the path I’m taking with it. I also have OCD so it’s not helping me too much on when to settle with a story. Have you got any advice on feeling confident in choosing the right story and how to know it’s worth keeping at it? I feel sort of a pull towards them wing it around mental health, is that too common in the industry?

How does one find comp titles without using AI? I just finished my manuscript, currently in beta reading phase. Wanted to start querying after.

The only comp title I can think of rn is unfortunately Carmilla bc sapphic vampire, I need to read or at least know more vampire stories to have better comp titles 😭

Would you use a comp that the agents reps - if it follows all the other rules or is that too much—too close?

When you say not blockbuster but selling well, would that still be on the bestseller list but toward the bottom? Or not even on that list? Where would we find books that are selling well but not blockbuster household names/oprah’s book club level

If you’ve got something like a fantasy whodunit would you recommend having a fantasy comp that matches more with your worldbuilding or aesthetics and a mystery comp that’s closer to your tone, characters, and structure, or would it be better to find other fantasy whodunits even if they’re not as similar in individual aspects?

I read somewhere if you do not have good comp titles, you can use tropes. Is that true?

What if you have a main genre and a sub genre like romantic suspense, could you pull from romance or suspense on their own? Or do you need to have only comps from other romantic suspense.
