TOPIC: THE ARK OF THE COVENANT; GOD, ORISHA OR THE SECRET OF POWER? The story of Moses and the Ark of the Covenant (Àpótí Ẹrí) raises profound questions about spiritual power. Moses was instructed by God to construct the Ark and was shown the materials to use. It contained the two stone tablets, the remnant of manna preserved in a golden container, and Aaron’s staff. The Ark became a powerful instrument and was to be carried by the children of Levi, the Levites. After the demise of Moses, it was moved from one place to another until the time of King David. The Ark was carried before the people into different battles, where they conquered. It was regarded as so powerful that people approached it with their requests, believing that the power associated with it could answer them. At one point, David’s servants were transporting the Ark on a cart pulled by oxen. When the oxen stumbled, Uzzah reached out to prevent the Ark from falling. The moment he touched it, he died instantly. This raises a deeper question: Did Uzzah die because he touched the power of God, or what exactly caused his death? Sacrifices were also made in connection with the worship of the Ark, including the sacrifice of a male cow or calf, according to the teaching. Yet, in different lands, people also sacrifice rams and cows to deities. Is it the same thing? This brings us to a deeper question: Are these truly different powers? Is it God that we are all serving but calling by different names? Are we all Olorisha, or is Orisha something different from God? Or is what we call a deity ultimately the same as God?
