Just as support for the “white people didn’t stumble upon Katniss being indigenous on their own”: I *vividly* remember the arguments people were having on tumblr back in like 2011/12 about this. POC had to *point* to the in-text description of, like, “olive-toned skin,” and a lot of white people were still arguing back that that could’ve just meant she was Italian or Greek

if fans are gonna read katniss as indigenous then gale has to be read as indigenous too and I don’t think fans are ready fo contend with the implications that they (and Collins) have been vilifying a brown man in direct comparison to peeta, a white man

it’s also incredibly baffling how rue is considered good representation now when the casting decision was hated on FIERCELY in 2012. suzanne collins never commented on that either, and now time has passed and the whole incident has been erased. maybe i’m focusing on the wrong point, idk, but that part really bothers me

it's so annoying that whenever Suzanne Collins comes out with a new book people always throw around the "Collins says she only picks up that pen whenever she wants to say something" and it's like 1.)she never said that 2.) why you waiting for her to say it 3.) she only seems to have something to say when it comes with a multimillion dollar book and movie deal

People recreate cinna’s murder as a joke on here! They don’t even take the story seriously! It feels like the same way white academics write about things as though they’re just theories / ideas and not things that have real consequences for marginalized people!

love your analysis as always! i think what frustrates me as well about people giving suzanne too much credit in this area is that i feel like for some people, thg is as far as they get in dystopian reading, let alone actual criticism and philosophy on the topics of class and race, so the fact that some people out there act like thg perfectly led them to be aware of every aspect of capitalism and racism and now they are informed and ready for revolution is crazy

I’m not against racial subtext/coding in dystopian or fantasy settings where race might be viewed differently than it is in our current society, and I think they can be good representation. HOWEVER, for that to happen I believe the author has to double down and explicitly confirm the character’s race irl, as well as defending the actor of said character from racists in the event of a show/movie being made, which Suzanne did not do at all 🫠

omg! heavy on yt fans are more likely to engage in the idyllic fantasy rather than the harmful realities of that fantasy! I know I comment a lot about lotr & star wars but behavior like this makes it impossible to be part of those fandoms cause they can't engage in constructive criticism

I nearly lost a friendship over RBG when I said her flippant ignoring of indigenous life made her not a very good feminist figure and this persons favorite book was the hunger games and she also believed katniss was Native American

media literacy is dead and leaving things up to context clues and subtext doesnt do it. white centric people will always assume a character is white even when the text leaves a breadcrumb trail that says otherwise. if theyre not told in bold letter THIS PERSON IS POC they'll only ever assume white

“Oh but it’s a good thing Suzanne does not comment on the current world politics, she speaks through her books! She only writes when she’s got something to say about the world.” Yeah well, a statement about her stance would be NICE. And I always eye roll at the anecdote of her coming up with the idea while channel surfing, when Battle Royale was out for years at that point

You kind of called me out on this, and I thank you so much for it. your are absolutely correct, Suzanne really doesn't deserve the flowers for Katniss, especially after casting a white actress for her.

Yep we can also critique the stuff we like and the hunger games is not perfect and we should stop upholding it as perfect

Yeah I'll be honest, as a white guy, it's been super uncomfortable seeing other white people genuinely support the depiction of black characters in thg when it's a lot of "Look how nobley, lovingly, and bravely these black folks DIE for the narrative", when there are authors like Tochi Onyebuchi and N.K. Jemisin telling richer stories that don't rely on repetitive trauma exploitation

I feel like it should not be revolutionary to say that quietly caching a check while letting everyone speculate about your political commentary/intent is not the opposite of JK, it is the normal quiet way of exploiting groups that are desperate for representation without ever actively providing any true, meaningful representation for them. It is not the opposite of being actively terrible, nor the opposite of revolutionary, it is a quiet, calculated opportunism that maintains deniability.

I also really don't enjoy how white folks treat indigenous rep as like a consolation prize to other POC. it sucks a lot of the joy of getting to see other native folks in media when white ppl jump all over it and tell other poc to be grateful
