POV: a zakynthian policeman interrogates a scholar about a crime that happened in Nafplio in the 1830s. Dimitrios K. Byzantios (1790–1853), whose real surname was Chatziaslanis, is one of the most important playwrights of the post-revolutionary period. He served as interpreter to the Bey of Tunis and participated in public administration during the formative years of the independent Greek state. From 1838 onwards, he withdrew from public service and engaged professionally in icon painting. Nevertheless, his principal contribution lies in the field of theatre. His most significant work is Babylonia, a five-act comedy first published in Nafplio in 1836 and finalized in Athens in 1840. It constitutes the first noteworthy example of modern Greek dramatic writing after the Revolution of 1821. The play is set in a tavern in Nafplio, where representatives from various regions of the Greek world come together. The action unfolds the day after the Battle of Navarino and revolves around the breakdown of communication among the characters due to their differing regional dialects. Babylonia is therefore an early theatrical depiction of the linguistic and cultural heterogeneity of the newly established Greek state. The scene featured in this reel is taken from the eponymous film adaptation of Babylonia, directed by Giorgos Dizykrikis. Released in the 1970s, the film was the director’s seventh and final full-length feature. Ilias Logothetis, who plays the Zakynthian police officer, received the Best Supporting Actor Award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival for his performance. Despite its limited commercial success (83,349 tickets – ranked 60th out of 87 Greek productions that season), the adaptation constitutes an interesting stage interpretation of the play and a representative example of the cultural reception of Byzantios’ work in twentieth-century Greek artistic production. #zakynthos #ionianislands #zante #history #historicalsocietyzakynthos #cinema #theatre #DimitrisVyzantios
