Jai Kumar never loved Maya. He sees her more like an object or a muse. After he got what he wanted he lost interest in Maya. There is a part where Jai Kumar says 'Don’t fall in love with me,’ after they were intimate but Maya answers 'You’re the one who always talks about love.’ He manipulated her to get what he wanted. Then he didn’t even care after she disappeared. He only wants her back after he knows the King fell in love with her. Maya being the King’s woman really triggers his ego since he knows he is the illegitimate son of the late King. So maybe he was jealous of the King or competitive with him, so he manipulates Maya again to feed his ego. Maya is the only one who truly loved Jai Kumar.

If I’m honest, this movie is the south Asian version of memoirs of a Geisha, visually stunning, amazing cinematography and costumes, but incredibly orientalist. It’s like a white mans fantasy of India than an actuality of Ancient Indian society. -

Like when we were children”.. reference to when they were raised as sisters in the Royal court .. Ugh its so relatable being a woman at the mercy of a Patriarchy society..

I feel like the movie was about women in a patriarchal society. And other abused women in this society perpetuating cycles of abuse. Also just the lie that women are fed about marriage. 1. The kings mom told the wife, it’s old news you’ll get over her sleeping with ur husband on ur wedding night just as I got over my husband doing the same. 2. Maya panders to men, so she ends up getting better end of the stick. Tara kind of resisted him. and he abuses her. 3. Tara thought that marriage was going to put her in this unbelievable status over Maya. But at the end of the day they both end up miserable in the same position
